Welcome to apotheose.art
On this website, I will write about what I see in arts and what I hear in music - concerts, operas, recordings, festivals, performances, dance and ballet. I'll also highlight interesting exhibitions, concerts, museums, architecture in Brussels, in Belgium and beyond.
Apotheose, or apotheosis (from Ancient Greek ἀποθέωσις) has many meanings. Originally, it was used for the elevation of someone (or something) to a divine level, but in the arts it is used as a culmination, climax of beauty. It refers to the depiction of a subject being elevated to divine status, often symbolizing the glorification of a person, event, or concept. Rooted in ancient traditions, particularly in Greco-Roman and Christian art, apotheosis portrays mortals ascending to the heavens or receiving divine honors. In Renaissance and Baroque art, this theme became especially popular, with rulers, saints, or national heroes depicted being carried by angels or surrounded by divine light, signifying their transcendence. Apotheosis serves both as a metaphor for immortality and as a political or religious tool to legitimize authority or celebrate greatness through visual representation.
Apotheosis in music refers to the moment or movement within a composition that symbolizes or evokes the elevation of a theme, character, or idea to its highest, most exalted state. This concept is often used to represent the glorification or deification of a figure, much like in visual art. In classical compositions, such as the works of Beethoven or Wagner, apotheosis may manifest as a grand, triumphant climax, marked by uplifting harmonies, powerful orchestration, or thematic resolutions that evoke transcendence. This musical device conveys the sense of reaching a divine or ultimate realization, frequently used in operas, symphonies, and requiems to highlight themes of heroism, spiritual victory, or the immortalization of a person or concept.
